Die-Cut: Die-cut business cards are the most unique cards you can have. If you choose to do a die-cut, you can pick from standard die-cuts or pick from one of the die-cuts your printing company may already have. There is also the option of creating your own die-cut, in which you can choose or design any shape for your die-cut that you want to. Depending on the complexity of your design, die cuts can cost anywhere from $50 and up. Your printing company will likely charge you for this die-cut because you will be their only customer to ever use it. This is the most expensive option for business card printing, but it is the best way to have a truly unique card that no one else will have.
The elements of a business card consist of 1) the style – horizontal or vertical, 2) color – black-and-white cards or color business cards, 3) printing materials – printed on papers, plastic cards or magnetic cards. The most important part of business cards, however, are the information elements of a business card. After all, business cards convey the message you want to pass to your prospects, customers or clients. Effective business cards make a huge difference in your daily interaction with prospects, customers or clients. Many business deals actually begin with the exchange of business cards. Effective business cards send a clear message to your customers about who you are and what your business does. But not all business cards are created equal. When you greet your customers with business cards, you want to impress them with messages that highlight the uniqueness and value of your products or services. If they don't use your services or buy your products today, you want to encourage them to come back in the future.
Photo cards. Getting your face on your own card-whether it's really a photograph, a drawing or even a caricature-helps a message remember the particular the very next time the affected individual sees you. Images representing products or services, or even a benefit your own business provides, can assist you communicate your own business much better than a large number of words. A little color (as opposed to just non colored documents) is frequently helpful on the picture card, too.
Trade Cards – Businessmen soon adopted the social convention for their professional needs, and recognised the potential for advertising their wares and services as well as letting people know where they were. At the time newspapers were limited in their circulation and printing techniques, so no other form of mass advertising was available. By printing a basic map of how to find the shop or business on the cards, they also became the earliest from of business directory. As printing techniques improved through the 18th and 19th centuries, so did the sophistication of trade cards, with ever improving colour and graphic designs, and Trade card production became a major printing industry in its own right. The improvements in printing, however, in turn led to the demise of the trade card. As newspapers and magazines with colours and pictures became cheaper and viable as mass media, they became a much more attractive place for advertising products and services, and by the end of the 19th century trade cards had virtually disappeared. The development of the telephone and changing social attitudes had much the same effect on calling cards with their use also falling out of fashion.
Your colour scheme is very important and you need to design a card that correctly reflects the nature of your business. There is no point having flashy and vibrant colours if you are in the banking industry. You may also have a design on your card such as stripes or squares and its all well and good but you need to get a colour scheme that is suitable. Some card designs draw attention to themselves using colours and the more colours you use, the more attention it will draw and you need to consider the aspect of inappropriate over attention.
Responsive cards. Some cards are distinguished not really much because when they are as because when believe that. They might use nonstandard materials, for example wood or metal, and have unusual shapes, edges, folds or embossing. Tactile cards are usually significantly more expensive than regular cards simply because they use nonstandard production processes for example die cuts. But also for some businesses, this more unusual card may be worth the cost.
A cluttered business card is as bad as one with too little information. Be very clear what information you need on the card, and keep to that. A nice graphic, your name, your role, a slogan and your contact details are all you need. Nothing else is necessary. If you try to crowd any more information on to the card two things will happen. First, the important information will become hard to see and, second, you will end up having to use such a small font that the card will become very hard to read. If all of these elements are incorporated, the business card will create a strong impression that sticks in the mind of the person who it was given to, and help make it the card that really stands out from the crowd.
