The icing on the cake for a good resume is a post script (P.S). This part will sum up the entire cover letter in one or two sentences. There should be another affirmation of the interview request and a pleasant parting phrase. While a post script is not a required part of a good cover letter, just like any good cake, it is something additional which will make it standout from the other cover letters and applicants. It can also be a good idea to use the P.S to inform the hiring manager of any additional papers which are inclosed. For example, many positions request salary requirements or references when a job-seek applies for a job. By using the P.S in your good cover letter to state what is attached, it lets the hiring manager know you followed through with that request, and if any of the papers are lost in the great shuffle, then they know to re-request them.
Another cover letter misconception is that job seekers believe that the cover letter templates that are on the internet and in books are designed just the way prospective employers want the cover letters to look. While prospective employers want to see professional looking cover letters, they are also looking for the fresh and unique cover letter that makes them take notice of the applicant.
Your cover letter example checklist should also be looking to see if your cover letter example is assertive. Your cover letter needs to be assertive and not passive. Your cover letter should from beginning to end be written so that it grabs the attention of the prospective employer and lands you that job interview. A passive voice is more than likely going to be passed over for a more assertive cover letter that another applicant sent in. So keep the voice of your cover letter to that of assertiveness and end with a request for an interview. Take the initiative to ask for an interview in the end. To do this in an assertive way you need to finalize your cover letter with telling the prospective employer when you will be making a follow up call with them to schedule and interview.
