The second part of a good cover letter is the paragraph which sells the job-seeker. This should be a carefully worded, concise paragraph that contains aspects of personality and expands on job experience. The point of this paragraph, in a good cover letter, is to let the hiring manager know what the company will reap if they are chosen. The hiring process is tedious for all parties, so the hiring manager wants to ensure the person they take on is the right individual. So in a good cover letter, a hiring manager has to be positive of that. Also, a good cover letter should make a connection with the hiring manager and get them to want to meet an applicant for a job interview in order to find out more.
If you are still too nervous about writing the cover letter to inject it with your personality you should change your mind set about your cover letter. The cover letter isn't about getting the job. That should never be the purpose of writing a cover letter. The goal of your cover letter should be in getting the interview. This takes a little bit of the stress off and reminds you that the job search process is much more than one thing though a great cover letter can definitely open the door to an interview you will need to shine in the interview as well. Do not hinge all hopes of getting the job on the cover letter though or you will find that you come across far too bland and are held back from showing the hiring manager that true appeal of your personality through fear. Cover letters can be stressful but if you make them fun you will find that you procrastinate less and, more importantly, land more interviews when all is said and done. Hiring managers hire people to work with their companies and not a set of skills. If you keep this in mind it is much easier to write a winning cover letter and enjoy (well almost) the process of doing so.
Free cover letters usually address the letter to sir/madam. Some of these free cover letters also address the cover letter 'to whom it may concern'. Both of these versions are wrong. A cover letter should be addressed to an actual person. This person is usually the contact person listed with the job advertisement. Prospective employers like to see that you care enough to find out the name of the person for whom the cover letter and resume are going to. Most junk mail that people receive ends up in the trash never even looked at. When you do not address your cover letter to an actual person you have made your cover letter look like the same junk mail everyone throws out. The former types of addressing is why your free cover letter could be the kiss of death for your resume.
