In the thousands of sites mentioned earlier, every one of them will make promises of how their cover letter is a guaranteed way to get an interview. Some of the sites may even promise that their cover letter is so personalized that it will be just like it was written by you. However, that's just not true. Generic cover letters, no matter how ”personalized” the site claim, have a completely different feel than truly personal cover letters. Everyone has different job skills, flaws and strengths, and experience and it is impossible for one generic cover letter to cover all possible angles. Don't fall for the gimmick, and remember the same type of sales pitch which even makes people consider using a generic cover letter is the same type of pitch one needs to use when selling themselves to a potential employer.
When you apply for any position, I'm sure you are all too aware that you are not the only one applying for that position. This is why it's so important to have a good cover letter. Your cover letter is going to get your foot in the door. It's the first step to the hiring process. Your cover letters needs to be more than just an average cover letter from the internet. Your cover letter needs to stand out among the rest. A boring cover letter is just going to wind up in the trashcan.
When applying for an Internship it is important to stand out amongst the crowd. Remember Elle Woods in Legally Blonde and her pink paper resume? While that is just a movie, and colored paper is not recommended, the concept is still the same– Be unique and get their attention. A passionate, and focused cover letter is the key to getting that desired Internship. An internship cover letter should reflect the potential one had has. Most people who apply for an Internship do not have resumes filled with career related experience. It is the cover letter which is going to be the deciding factor.
Take the time to sit and write a good your own cover letter. While a cover letter needs to contain a lot of information in a small amount of space, it's not too hard to write if you keep it one thing in mind: If you were the employer, what would make you hire yourself? There is no way a free cover letter sample could answer that question. While they may seem like a quick and easy fix to the dilemma of writing a cover letter, in the long run it's not worth the damage it can do to your job hunt. You can see now why a free sample cover letter and the trashcan are best friends.
A cover letter is as easy to come by as going to ”Google”, or some other search engine, and typing in ”sample cover letter”. There are thousands upon thousands of options out there ready to have information plugged into the appropriate spots and sent out. However, a cover letter like this is generic. The definition of generic is: characteristic of or relating to a class or group of things; not specific. Not specific indeed, that doesn't tell us much. Let's look at a couple synonyms– general, common, nonspecific, no-name. Those aren't very flattering words are they? That is exactly the type of impression a generic cover letter gives. It is a big flashing neon sign that the applicant is generic. It also says to the hiring manager that if the applicant cannot manage to do the work needed to create a personalized cover letter, perhaps they are not committed to doing any work whatsoever.
Do not send generic cover letters with your resume if you want to be considered seriously for a position. Each cover letter must be individually targeted to each position and if necessary, your resume should also be adjusted to suit. Your cover letter should be well written and free of errors if you hope to gain an interview. However, if you are not confident that you are able to write an effective cover letter, there are templates for writing cover letters freely available for download from the internet. Cover letter templates simply provide an outline of what you must include in your cover letter and even provide you with an order.
A big cover letter template misconception is that the job seeker should not add anything or take away any section of the cover letter template. As said above the cover letter template is just a starting point to give you ideas on how to put a cover letter together. Also as stated above the prospective employer is looking for something fresh and unique when scanning a cover letter. Therefore feel free to add to and take away from what the cover letter template is showing you to make your cover letter fresh and unique.
