There are places on the internet that will use a questionnaire and have you answer questions then place your responses into a cover letter for you. This is still just a template and again cover letter template misconceptions surround this method as well. Job seekers seem to think that the use of this cover letter writing service will give them a great cover letter. Again this is just a template that you will need to read the cover letter over and see if it truly shines and then add or take away areas that will allow for it to truly be a great cover letter.
One of the aspects a cover letter usually lacks, especially for an Intern, is being straight forward. In the past, people have been encouraged not to come across as too forward. A cover letter was recommended to be as passive-aggressive as possible. However, in the current competitive field it is important to be aggressive. An Intern cover letter should come right out and ask for an interview. After all, that is the whole purpose of writing a cover letter right? Aggressive is not a dirty word anymore, and most companies see this in a positive light. If one's cover letter is confident, and a clear declaration, then they are classified as a ”go-getter”.
The icing on the cake for a good resume is a post script (P.S). This part will sum up the entire cover letter in one or two sentences. There should be another affirmation of the interview request and a pleasant parting phrase. While a post script is not a required part of a good cover letter, just like any good cake, it is something additional which will make it standout from the other cover letters and applicants. It can also be a good idea to use the P.S to inform the hiring manager of any additional papers which are inclosed. For example, many positions request salary requirements or references when a job-seek applies for a job. By using the P.S in your good cover letter to state what is attached, it lets the hiring manager know you followed through with that request, and if any of the papers are lost in the great shuffle, then they know to re-request them.
A cover letter is meant to sell one's expertise and abilities in order to land a job position. By using a generic cover letter, none of an applicant's own personality or passion is included. The applicant may as well be a robot for all the hiring manager could know. Company's aren't looking to hire robots though, and generic cover letters just are not made to fit the job. Company's are looking to hire real people, with real experience, and real drive which they will throw behind the company. Therefore, a personalized cover letter which conveys these things are the only way to ensure a job interview.
Free cover letters are used by almost anyone who has access to the same place where you got your free cover letter. This means that your prospective employer is seeing the same old cover letter over and over again. Your cover letter needs to be original and unique enough to capture your prospective employers attention thus landing you an interview. Free cover letters also do not show you how to make your cover letter look unique and fresh to prospective employers. While a cover letter does show a generalized idea of how to write a cover letter it does not show you have to make one look unique and fresh to your prospective employer. If your cover letter is not fresh and unique and the prospective employer is seeing it over and over again only with a different name attached then more than likely it will wind up in the trash can along with all the other applicants that tried to use the same free cover letter.
The purpose of the cover letter is not to highlight your skills, education, or prowess in your field but rather to entice the hiring manger that yours is the resume he or she wants to pay attention to over the many others that have graced his or her desk. You are not likely to do this if your cover letter sounds like all the others that have come his or her way. Make it sound different, add your 'voice' to your cover letter and make sure it is your voice at its best. You want your cover letter to be an interesting and entertaining read that is actually true to who you are. Your personality should fill the page if you are really interested in landing the interview. Of course you will want to make sure you bring your personality along with you when the interview occurs so that they know you are one and the same person that wrote the cover letter.
Look at the second paragraph of these free letters. Do they include any highlights from your resume? Do they show how your skills and qualifications match those of the position? Probably not, because the letter is not geared toward any company or position. One of the key functions of a cover letter is to show how you and company are a great match. There is no way a free cover letter that you didn't write is going to get that across. This is the paragraph where you really have the chance to endorse yourself. You want to show the company that you are the solution to their problems. Why would you depend on a cover letter written by a complete stranger to do that for you? Ask yourself this, would you send a stranger in to an interview for you?
