Another great tip for an Intern cover letter is performing research on the company. If a cover letter includes information about the company, and the applicant uses that cover letter to share how the company information affects the individual, an employer is going to be impressed. For example, one may write in their cover letter that the company has produced product A, and B for Y amount of years. Then the Intern can relay their experience with the product, and why they want to support a company who makes it. A cover letter which demonstrates personality, and creativity, is more likely to be noticed than one who simply states ”I would like this Intern. I am qualified because…” in so many words. An Intern cover letter also has to show an applicant's attitude, and communication skills. If a cover letter reflects a well thought out structure, and an innovative approach, then the proof of a potential Intern's qualifications are in the pudding!
A cover letter is as easy to come by as going to ”Google”, or some other search engine, and typing in ”sample cover letter”. There are thousands upon thousands of options out there ready to have information plugged into the appropriate spots and sent out. However, a cover letter like this is generic. The definition of generic is: characteristic of or relating to a class or group of things; not specific. Not specific indeed, that doesn't tell us much. Let's look at a couple synonyms– general, common, nonspecific, no-name. Those aren't very flattering words are they? That is exactly the type of impression a generic cover letter gives. It is a big flashing neon sign that the applicant is generic. It also says to the hiring manager that if the applicant cannot manage to do the work needed to create a personalized cover letter, perhaps they are not committed to doing any work whatsoever.
Your free cover letter could be the kiss of death for your resume for many reasons. Cover letters are designed to get you an interview. There are many things wrong with free cover letters that instead of getting you an interview, they end up getting your resume sent to the trash can by a prospective employer. Once a prospective employer sends your resume to the trash can that is it with that company. There are seldom times when you will get a second chance with that company.
