A resume cover letter template does not contain the most important elements of any cover letter. The whole point behind a resume cover letter is to get an interview. In order to do this, a resume cover letter must be convincing and demonstrate all the skills one so painstakingly perfected on their resume. After committing so much time on creating a resume that looks professional, it makes little sense to leave the job underdone by using a resume cover letter template.
Most of the free cover letters you will find out there are very generic. Their introductions can sometimes include the 5 most fatal words a cover letter can contain ”To Whom it May Concern”. Those words alone will earn any cover letter a trip to the trashcan. A good cover needs to be addressed to a specific person. The first paragraph is always customized for that company you are applying to. A free cover letter is never going to show that you understand the business needs of the company. A free cover letter is never going to be able to introduce you and why you want to work for the company. Only you can do that.
What is a resume cover letter template? A resume cover letter template is a pre-generated cover letter where one only has to ”fill in the blanks”. Resume cover letter templates can be found included in most word processing software (which I will never understand) or by doing a search on the internet. With resume cover letters so readily available, it goes to show that most people use this method when applying for jobs. It is also an assumption that the way to land an interview is by being one of the first applicants for the job. This is not necessarily the case. A hiring manager is looking for the best candidate for the job and is not simply going to choose the first person to come along. They want to find the best applicant. If a resume cover letter does not grab their attention, which is what a resume cover letter achieves, then they are not going to waste time reviewing the applicant further.
When using your cover letter example checklist, look and see if the cover letter example that you are thinking of using shows you how and where to point out to the prospective employer what it is about their company that you like. You should place this below the paragraph in which you tell them why you are fit for the job in which you are applying for. This should be about one paragraph long and should briefly tell them what it is about their specific company that you like as the reasons why you wish to work there. If you are unsure about what it is that you like, then do some digging into the company so that you can give them specific reasons. Most cover letter examples when they do show you where to place this paragraph only give you a generalized version of what to write. So make sure to change this to more specific information.
The purpose of the cover letter is not to highlight your skills, education, or prowess in your field but rather to entice the hiring manger that yours is the resume he or she wants to pay attention to over the many others that have graced his or her desk. You are not likely to do this if your cover letter sounds like all the others that have come his or her way. Make it sound different, add your 'voice' to your cover letter and make sure it is your voice at its best. You want your cover letter to be an interesting and entertaining read that is actually true to who you are. Your personality should fill the page if you are really interested in landing the interview. Of course you will want to make sure you bring your personality along with you when the interview occurs so that they know you are one and the same person that wrote the cover letter.
The icing on the cake for a good resume is a post script (P.S). This part will sum up the entire cover letter in one or two sentences. There should be another affirmation of the interview request and a pleasant parting phrase. While a post script is not a required part of a good cover letter, just like any good cake, it is something additional which will make it standout from the other cover letters and applicants. It can also be a good idea to use the P.S to inform the hiring manager of any additional papers which are inclosed. For example, many positions request salary requirements or references when a job-seek applies for a job. By using the P.S in your good cover letter to state what is attached, it lets the hiring manager know you followed through with that request, and if any of the papers are lost in the great shuffle, then they know to re-request them.
We're almost to the end now. A good cover letter is going to contain a request for an interview. This is something that most cover letters leave our. Asking for an interview, coupled with effective writing, make the perfect combination of a good cover letter. Be sure that all contact information is easy to locate on the cover letter, and specify what is the best method of contact. Also, another aspect to a good cover letter is a statement of follow-up. Let the hiring manager know to expect a call, e-mail, or letter touching base with them again. This is a good way to show enthusiasm and motivation.
