Writing an Intern cover letter is hard work. Exactly, it is hard word. Just like the position one is applying for. One is going to be expected to work hard in their desired position, and therefore, working hard to get that desired position is needed. While using a sample cover letter from the Internet, or writing one standard cover letter and adapting it for each individual job, is easier; the bottom line is that the cover letter is not going to get the job done. No employer wants an Intern whom is going through the motions. An employer wants an Intern whom is going to give 110% to the company. There is no reason for that percentage to not be applied before the job even begins.
Writing cover letters that target the requirements of the job and demonstrate a healthy understanding of the organization and industry you want to work in will greatly increase your prospects of obtaining an interview. So how do you go about writing cover letters that get your resume read first? Your cover letter creates the first impression of you and can influence the way a potential employer views your application. Writing cover letters that grab the reader's interest and encourage a careful reading of your resume must therefore be considered as important as writing an effective resume.
Check your cover letter example over to see if it shows you how to express yourself and your qualifications to the prospective employer. Most cover letters are to generalized to express a specific need for a specific employer. Most job advertisements tell what specific skills and traits they are looking for. Make sure that in your one paragraph you have addressed those skills and traits. This section of your cover letter should be brief and to the point in addressing the needs of the prospective employer. It should be one paragraph long and highlight your qualifications for the position in which you have applied for. So do not allow yourself to be hindered by the example set forth within the cover letter example that you are using.
For the most part cover letter examples are just that, they are generalized examples that can be used by anyone needing a cover letter. So keep in mind that it is only an example and that you can not just change around a few words and send it out as your cover letter. When you send a cover letter out like this you are taking huge risk that your employer has seen the same old cover letter countless times before. As stated above they are looking for any reasons and that means any reason at all.
Free cover letters usually address the letter to sir/madam. Some of these free cover letters also address the cover letter 'to whom it may concern'. Both of these versions are wrong. A cover letter should be addressed to an actual person. This person is usually the contact person listed with the job advertisement. Prospective employers like to see that you care enough to find out the name of the person for whom the cover letter and resume are going to. Most junk mail that people receive ends up in the trash never even looked at. When you do not address your cover letter to an actual person you have made your cover letter look like the same junk mail everyone throws out. The former types of addressing is why your free cover letter could be the kiss of death for your resume.
You can add more to the cover letter than is suggested if you feel it is necessary, however, cover letters should be relatively short. They should be no longer than two pages at the most, but ideally one page of three to four paragraphs is what you should aim for. Remember when writing cover letters that they should be short, concise and to the point. Do not include anything that is not directly relevant to your application. Make it as easy as possible for a potential employer to see that you fulfill all the specifications for the job. Your cover letter is meant to both inform and influence. In a sense, writing cover letters that are effective and interesting will predispose potential employers in your favor and they will read your resume more proactively and positively than otherwise.
What this all boils down to is, take the time to write a cover letter for each particular job. Yes, this is going to be a more involved process but the rewards are going to be greater. Instead of needing to send out one hundred resumes with generic cover letters, there will only be a need to circulate a select number of personalized cover letters. This will allow the ability to choose the perfect job and encourage one to get excited about the potential of the position. It is not about quantity, it is about quality. In general, for every one hundred cover letters one sends out, they will only receive a response to ten percent. This does not mean the response will be favorable either. Between the option of sending out one hundred generic cover letters, with the return response of ten percent, or twenty personalized cover letters with the return response of thirty percent, which seems like the best method? Additionally, with the latter option, the responses are going to be favorable at least half the time.
